Baptism

Sacrament

Baptism is a sign and symbol of God’s amazing grace, and one of two sacraments of the Lutheran church, grounded in Jesus’ command to baptize all nations in the Gospel of Matthew. When we are baptized we enter into a lifelong relationship with God in Jesus Christ, daily dying and rising with him. Because we believe God gives these gifts freely through Jesus, at St. Mark we offer the opportunity for baptism freely as well. Anyone of any age, infancy through adulthood, who has not been previously baptized may be baptized here.  Email or call the church office to set a pre-baptismal appointment to learn more!

Holy Communion

Sacrament

The second sacrament of the Lutheran church, is Jesus giving himself to us in bread and wine, as he promises in the Gospels. He is both the host and substance of this meal. The historic tradition of our church is that all baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion at our table.* For children in second grade or above who have not yet received Holy Communion, St. Mark conducts a First Holy Communion class each October.  Email or call the church office for more information!

*If you are worshiping at St. Mark as someone not yet baptized, but feel earnestly called in faith to our communion table, we will not stop to ask if you have been baptized. We respect and honor tradition, but also know that God’s grace is bigger than we can imagine! At the same time, should you receive communion during worship with us, we would strongly encourage you to speak to our pastor and consider receiving the sacrament of baptism in the near future.

Confirmation

Rite

Also called “affirmation of baptism”, confirmation is an opportunity for young people (7th and 8th grade) to deepen their knowledge of faith and affirm the promises that may have been made for them by parents or guardians when they were baptized as small children. Beginning in 7th grade (or thereabouts), confirmation students attend classes twice a month for two school-years and are confirmed at the conclusion of the program. Confirmation is held each Spring on the day of Pentecost. For more information contact the church office!
